A Very Queer History: LGBTQ History & Classroom Inclusion
This course satisfies the Diversity & Inclusion requirement for the School Culture Advocate Certification. Learn more at www.safeschoolsacademy.org/csca.
Course Description: "School-based supports such as comprehensive anti-bullying/harassment policies, school personnel who are supportive of LGBT students, Gay-Straight Alliances and LGBT-inclusive curricular resources can positively affect school climate for LGBT students. Findings from the 2011 National School Climate Survey demonstrate that students attending schools with these resources and supports report more positive school experiences, including lower victimization and absenteeism and higher academic achievement." (from the 2011 GLSEN National School Climate Survey of LGBTQ Youth.)
This online course will provide Iowa educators an in-depth look at LGBTQ history, including major historical figures, events, and ideas for including inclusive history lessons into the classroom. Showing students the positive historical impact of LGBTQ individuals can have a lasting impact of making them feel more safe, supported, and included in the classroom.
Activities in this course will include discussions about major historical events, such as the Holocaust's impact on LGBTQ individuals, the Stonewall Riots, and the HIV crisis. Participants will have an opportunity to directly converse with national figures who are making history today in the movement.
