Making your Classroom Safe for LGBTQ Youth
Making your Classroom Safe for LGBTQ Youth
This course satisfies the Diversity & Inclusion requirement for the School Culture Advocate Certification. Learn more at www.safeschoolsacademy.org/csca.
Course Description: All students deserve a safe and supportive place to learn, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) their identity. Studies continue to show LGBTQ youth are at higher risk than their peers for bullying, homelessness, and increased suicide risk due to isolation and discrimination in schools and communities.
Specific topics to be covered include LGBTQ terminology, statistics, research-based interventions/supports, and an in-depth discussion on hate and the movement for social justice. Through the use of online activities, readings, videos, and discussions, this course will leave participants better prepared to meet the needs for these youth and LGBTQ families. It is an introductory course to issues impacting LGBTQ youth.
This is a one credit course.*
*Participants taking Drake graduate credit can enroll in a maximum of 12 graduate hours per academic semester. If you take more than 12 credit hours, not all of your credits will be issued nor will your money be refunded.
